PRODUCT SAFETY

There have been a number of recent press releases, articles, and televised features regarding the safety of plastic water bottles and plastic containers in general. The primary concern is with the chemical BISPHENOL-A (BPA). BPA is a component used to make resin for the production of polycarbonate bottles.

A widely viewed television segment on the April 9, 2008 NBC TODAY show on the safety of water bottles contained, in our opinion, a number of inaccuracies, those being:

1. PET (Recycling symbol #1) bottles are NOT for single use only.

2. Recycling symbol #7 is not exclusive to polycarbonate but also for a host of other plastic compounds.

3. Recycling symbol #6 relates to polystyrene which is a respected commodity resin that has been used for years with no evidence of ill effects.

4. Recycling symbol #3 PVC comes in many forms. The suspect form is flexible PVC which is allegedly harmful in children’s toys. Rigid PVC used in bottles and pipes that transport drinking water contains no phthalates which is the questionable chemical contained in flexible PVC.
